How we make money: we earn a commission if you sign up for Polymarket or subscribe to KalshiSpy through our links. We earn nothing from Kalshi, Robinhood, FanDuel, DraftKings, Novig or OG. Rankings are not for sale. Full disclosure

Already use DraftKings or FanDuel? Skip to when each is the better tool. Want the platforms? Jump to the prediction-market picks. Just want the verdict? Sportsbooks still win on live betting, boosts and promotions. Prediction markets win on fees for futures, exiting early and access in states without legal sportsbooks.

If you searched "best sports betting," there is a second kind of product to know about. Sports prediction markets (Kalshi, Polymarket US, Robinhood) are CFTC-regulated exchanges where you buy YES or NO contracts from other traders and can sell before the game ends. Sportsbooks (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars) are state-licensed operators that set the odds and take the other side. In 2026 the two have started to overlap: Kalshi lists spreads, props and parlay-style combos, and DraftKings and FanDuel run their own prediction apps. This page explains the difference, then ranks the prediction-market options by our scores.

We do not run a sportsbook affiliate program and do not rank sportsbooks. We earn a commission on Polymarket sign-ups through our link and nothing from Kalshi, Robinhood, FanDuel or DraftKings.

Why this page does not rank sportsbooks

Sportsbooks are a real product with a real audience, and for some kinds of betting they are the better tool. We cover prediction markets. Many people searching for sports betting in 2026 have not heard that CFTC-regulated sports contracts exist, or that in states such as Texas and California, where online sports betting is illegal, they are the main regulated way to trade on games.

If you want an NFL Sunday of live in-game bets and boosted parlays, a licensed sportsbook is built for that. If you want futures, the option to exit early, or access in a state without sportsbooks, a prediction market may suit you better.

When each is the better tool

Sportsbooks are usually better for

  • Live in-game betting with a full menu. Kalshi and Novig list live markets, but sportsbooks still offer far more in-play options.
  • Boosted odds and big promotions. Sportsbooks pay for customers with odds boosts and bet credits. Prediction-market offers are smaller.
  • Huge prop menus. Sportsbooks list hundreds of player props per game. Kalshi has props and combos, but fewer.
  • Bracket contests and pools. Sportsbooks and fantasy sites run them; exchanges do not.

Prediction markets are usually better for

  • Futures and championship markets. A Super Bowl or MVP future on an exchange costs a visible fee instead of a hidden margin, and you can sell before the season ends.
  • Exiting early. If your team goes up 3-0 in a series, you can sell your contract to lock in a gain.
  • Seeing the market. You can see every bid and ask. A sportsbook shows only its price.
  • States without legal sportsbooks. In Texas, California and other states without legal online sports betting, prediction markets are the main regulated way to trade on games.
  • Price comparison. The same game can trade at different prices on Kalshi, Polymarket US and Robinhood.

When it is close

  • Super Bowl winner before the season: both work; compare the sportsbook's implied probability to the exchange price plus fee.
  • NBA Finals winner: both have it; on the exchange you can exit.
  • MVP futures: both have it; exchanges often show one row per candidate.

Many sports bettors use both: a sportsbook for live action and promotions, an exchange for futures and early exits.

The prediction-market picks

Our ranking follows our platform scores (methodology).

1. Kalshi: best for US sports (4.6/5)

Kalshi has the deepest US sports catalog on a CFTC-regulated exchange and handled about 76% of tracked prediction-market volume, all categories, from September 16 to October 15, 2026 (DeFi Rate).

What Kalshi lists:

  • NFL games, division winners, playoffs, Super Bowl winner, MVP and props
  • college football and basketball, including tournament games
  • NBA games, series and Finals
  • UFC, F1, tennis, golf and soccer
  • point spreads, totals, player props and combos

Fees and interest. The taker fee is about $1.75 per 100 contracts at 50 cents, or roughly $3.50 per $100 put in (DeFi Rate). Kalshi pays a variable 3.50% APY on balances of $250 or more (Kalshi help center).

State limits. Sports are blocked in Nevada, Michigan and Washington, Ohio and Utah may now enforce, and several other states are contesting Kalshi in court (OddsShopper, October 15, 2026).

2. Polymarket US: best for headline events and futures (4.5/5)

Polymarket US is strongest on the Super Bowl, World Cup, Champions League, F1 and championship futures. At Super Bowl LX, DeFi Rate tracked $795.3 million of Polymarket volume against $833.2 million on Kalshi (DeFi Rate).

What to know:

  • The US app runs on QCX, the CFTC-licensed exchange Polymarket bought in July 2025.
  • The taker fee is 0.0695 × contracts × price × (1 − price): about $1.74 per 100 contracts at 50 cents. Makers earn a rebate (Polymarket US fee schedule, October 2026). Earlier versions of this page called its sports fee the cheapest in the category; it is now about level with Kalshi.
  • Funding is in dollars by card, bank transfer, wire or Apple Pay.
  • It is widely reported as unavailable in Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio (OddsShopper).

3. Robinhood: best for big games in a brokerage app (4.0/5)

Robinhood lists the big games and futures inside its main app, routed to KalshiEX, ForecastEx, Rothera or Crypto.com's North American Derivatives Exchange.

What to know:

  • Commission is 10% × price × (1 − price) per contract (5% with Gold), capped at $0.01, plus exchange fees of up to $0.01 (Robinhood).
  • Maryland and Nevada residents cannot trade sports contracts; Michigan residents cannot open new ones since September 9, 2026. Robinhood has also stood down in Washington, and a Connecticut order applies (our Robinhood review).
  • You must be 18.

Sportsbook brands' prediction apps (not yet scored)

FanDuel Predicts and DraftKings Predictions list sports contracts in the same 18 states (AK, AL, CA, DE, FL, GA, HI, ID, MN, ND, NE, NM, OK, RI, SC, SD, TX, UT), mostly places where they do not run a sportsbook. Elsewhere they list non-sports contracts. DraftKings charges $0.01–$0.02 per contract on its DKeX exchange (SI, October 16, 2026). FanDuel lists contracts from CME Group and Crypto.com (RotoWire, September 30, 2026). Both are 18+.

Novig is a sports-focused exchange, CFTC-designated since June 16, 2026, 21+, with no fee on pregame straight trades (Action Network).

Use cases in detail

NFL Sunday spreads

Mostly sportsbooks. Sportsbooks price every game's spread and moneyline with live updates. Kalshi now lists spreads too, so compare: the sportsbook's margin is built into the odds, the exchange's fee is shown separately.

Live in-game betting

Sportsbooks. Kalshi and Novig have live markets (Novig charges a fee only on live trades), but sportsbooks have far more in-play options.

Same-game parlays

Mostly sportsbooks. Kalshi's combos and DraftKings Predictions' combos exist, but sportsbooks have more legs and more boosts.

Super Bowl winner before the season

Close; exchanges often cost less. Both list it. On an exchange, a team priced at 17 cents costs about 6% of the price in taker fees on Kalshi or Polymarket US, because the fee as a share of the price equals the multiplier times (1 − price). A sportsbook's margin on futures is built into the odds and not shown; compare implied probabilities across books to estimate it. On an exchange you can also sell before the season ends.

NBA Finals winner

Close; on an exchange you can exit. If your team leads the series 3-0, you can sell to lock in a gain instead of waiting.

Bracket contests

Sportsbooks and fantasy sites. Exchanges list tournament outcomes but do not run bracket pools.

Player props

Sportsbooks have more. Kalshi lists player props, but sportsbooks list far more per game.

"Will Team X make the playoffs?"

Prediction markets. This is a natural YES/NO question. Kalshi lists division and playoff markets for every NFL team.

MVP futures

Close. Exchanges often show one row per candidate, which makes the field easy to compare.

Price gaps between platforms

Exchanges only. The same game can trade at different prices on Kalshi, Polymarket US and Robinhood. Check that both contracts settle the same way before trading the gap.

Verdict

  • Coming from a sportsbook and want one prediction-market account? Start with Kalshi (4.6/5) for the widest US sports menu, if your state allows sports.
  • Mainly trade the Super Bowl, global soccer or futures? Polymarket US (4.5/5) is a close second, where available.
  • Already on Robinhood? Robinhood (4.0/5) is the lowest-effort start.
  • Want both kinds of product? Keep a licensed sportsbook for live betting and promotions, and an exchange for futures and early exits.

We do not point readers to any particular sportsbook. If you want one, choose a sportsbook licensed in your state.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sportsbook and a sports prediction market?

A sportsbook sets the odds, takes the other side and builds a margin into the price. A prediction market matches you with another trader, charges a fee, and you can sell before the event ends. Kalshi now also lists spreads, props and combos, so the menus overlap more than they used to.

Is this page ranking sportsbooks?

No. We do not run a sportsbook affiliate program. We rank the prediction-market options and explain when a sportsbook is the better tool.

When are sportsbooks better?

For live in-game betting with a full menu, large prop menus, odds boosts and big promotions, and bracket contests.

When are prediction markets better?

For futures with a visible fee, exiting early, seeing the order book, comparing prices across platforms, and access in states without legal sportsbooks.

Which prediction market has the most US sports?

Kalshi: NFL, college sports, NBA, UFC, F1, tennis, golf and soccer, with spreads, totals, props and combos.

Which has the best Super Bowl market?

Kalshi and Polymarket were close at Super Bowl LX: $833.2 million against $795.3 million in DeFi Rate's count.

Can I use both?

Yes. Many people keep a sportsbook for live betting and an exchange for futures.

Why are sports contracts blocked in some states?

States argue they are unlicensed sports betting. Courts have blocked Kalshi's sports contracts in Nevada, Michigan and Washington, and the Ninth and Sixth Circuits ruled for states in 2026. The Third Circuit ruled for Kalshi in New Jersey, and New Jersey has asked the Supreme Court to decide.

What welcome offers are there?

They change often. Each platform shows its current offer during sign-up. See our dated promo code pages; we do not list amounts we have not confirmed.

It depends. See are prediction markets legal? and our state guides.

Can I bet live during the game on a prediction market?

Partly. Kalshi and Novig list live markets, and prices update during play. Sportsbooks still offer many more in-play options.

How does the math compare on a Super Bowl future?

Say a team is +500 at a sportsbook, an implied 16.7% before the book's margin, and the same team trades at 17 cents on an exchange. On the exchange you pay 17 cents plus a taker fee of about a cent per contract (0.07 × 0.17 × 0.83 on Kalshi, 0.0695 × 0.17 × 0.83 on Polymarket US), and you can sell at the market price later. On the sportsbook you pay the stake and wait, unless you accept a cash-out offer.
